Fleeing Myawaddy

In December 2010, the day after Myanmar's landmark - albeit a foregone conclusion - national election, a faction of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army, led by renegade leader General Na Kham Way, seized Myawaddy from the Burmese Army. Within 24 hours, tens of thousands of refugees had fled across the border in nearby Mae Sot and the forests and villages along the border. Thirty six hours later, Na Kham Way's men retreated, their point proven. Burmese military retaliation, however, was to last for months.
