By now, the people who get it, get it, and the people who don’t get it, well, they probably never will.
There is an underlying truth to the ‘never wills’ position: vested interest. Acceptance of a climate change reality will directly impact their businesses or lifestyles and so, backed into a corner, “Never Wills” fight hard to defend their position.
In Australia, however, recent elections suggest there are more ‘get its’ than ‘don’t get its’ regarding climate change.
So the issues not so much about the “Never wills” at all. Instead should be seen as: what is this majority prepared to do, to insist upon, to see its perspectives prevail and become policy and practice.
And here lies the inconvenient truth because the answer, simply, is ‘Not enough’.
For climate change deniers the argument is personal.
For climate change believers, the argument is moral, holistic, global.
And people fight harder when the impact is more personally direct.
