About
Timothy has worked in freelance media as an author, film director, and documentary photographer since 1996. Originally intent on pursuing a career as an independent feature film director, this changed after travelling to Burma in 1998. The result was the writing and publication of Welcome to Burma and Enjoy the Totalitarian Experience (Orchid Press, 2001). Thereafter Timothy’s work focused primarily on social, humanitarian, and environmental issues in South East Asia. In 2004, to facilitate the production of the feature documentary, Burmese Dreaming, Timothy moved to the Thai-Myanmar border.
Timothy was based on the border for the best part of 12 years working between reportage photography, documentaries, and advocacy, educational and promotional films both as a ‘freelancer’ and on behalf of organisations including the International Rescue Committee, Save the Children, World Education, Oxford University and the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit, and Handicap International.
Burmese Dreaming, A Documentary Poem, completed in 2010, enjoyed a world premiere at the United Nations’ We the People’s Documentary Festival (London) before being showcased at Hot Docs, and making its US premiere at the Buffalo-Niagra Film Festival. It enjoyed further festival screenings in Europe, Canada, Thailand and Australia.
Timothy’s photography has been widely exhibited in Australia and internationally, exhibitions being opened by dignitaries including Nobel Peace Laureate Jose Ramos Jorta, former Australian Governor General Sir Ninian Stephen, and former Australian Ambassador to Burma, China and Malaysia, Mr Garry Woodard. Timothy’s photo-journalism has twice received honourable achievement awards at the Prix 3 French International Photography Awards and has also been a prize winner at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club (Thailand) photojournalism awards.
Timothy has undertaken media consultancies including giving a media face (written and photographic) to the 5 year SHIELD project on the Thai-Myanmar border, involving a consortium of International Aid Organisations. Timothy was the co-founder and director of the migrant children’s art project, (Kick Start-Art), Thai-Myanmar border, from 2004-2013, a project which continues to this day.
Tim other was educated at Scotch College (Melbourne), studied law at the University of Melbourne (incomplete) and is a former vice president of the International Society for Human Rights.
Timothy currently lives in Australia, is a member of Lifestories Australia, and splits work between ‘My Tale’ media and an ongoing interest in social, humanitarian and environmental media projects.
